Penrith Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Cumbria, and around 17 miles south, and slightly east, of Carlisle, is the town of Penrith. Geographically Penrith is situated in the Eden District of Cumbria, between the Lake District to the southwest, and the North Pennines to the east. The name 'Penrith' comes from Old English 'penn' and 'rid', meaning 'hill ford' or 'chief ford'. Historically it was part of Cumberland up until 1974. During the 14th century Penrith was sacked by the Scots multiple times. In 1399 work began on the construction of Penrith Castle as a defence against further Scottish raids. Among its residents was Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who would later become King Richard III. The castle was demolished after the Civil War. In 1745 Penrith was occupied by Bonnie Prince Charlie during the Jacobite Rebellion. This was an attempt by the Scottish Stuart family to reclaim the British throne from the House of Hanover. Penrith received a railway connection in 1846. Then in 1861 the Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith Railway constructed a line traversing Cumberland from east to west. The entire line was eventually closed between 1966 and 1972 due to the Beeching Cuts, when it was decided that over 2000 railway stations should close due to the increase in road traffic. Penrith Station remained open as it was, and still is, situated on the West Coast Main Line between London Euston and Glasgow Central. Penrith is a popular spot for hikers wishing to explore the Lake District, the North Pennines and the northern end of the Yorkshire Dales. Around six miles southwest of the town is Ullswater - the second largest lake in the Lake District (behind Windermere). The poet William Wordsworth went to school in Penrith. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
