Penryn Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Cornwall, and around one mile northwest of Falmouth, is the town of Penryn. The town's name derives from Cornish 'Pennrynn', meaning 'point of the promontory/headland'. It was founded in 1216 by Bishop Simon de Apulia the Italian Bishop of Exeter and Lord of the Manor of Treliever. Situated on the Penryn River, just a few miles from the sea, the town became a thriving trading port for Cornish tin and copper. In 1265 Glasney College was founded at Penryn. This made the town a seat of ecclesiastical learning for three centuries. Said to have been modelled on Exeter Cathedral, the college building was targeted for closure during the Reformation, being a Roman Catholic institution. However, the chantry church survived until 1548 during Edward VI's reign. The following year saw the Prayer Book Rebellion of 1549. This was a revolt led by Catholics from Cornwall and Devon against the forces of Edward VI. The rebellion was quashed, and over 5,500 people died. In the aftermath of the rebellion, the Cornish language became associated with sedition. As such, this was one of the reasons why the Book of Common Prayer was never translated into Cornish, leading to its decline to the point that by 1700, Cornish had already become an endangered language. In 1863 the railway arrived in Penryn courtesy of the Cornwall Railway - a company which was later sold to the Great Western Railway. Today the station forms part of the Maritime Line - a branch line between Truro and Falmouth Docks. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
