Pennsylvania Railroad 643: Steam Show at the Williams Grove Railroad-August 24, 2024

For the first time, we ventured out to the Williams Grove Historical Steam Association to witness the only operable Pennsylvania Railroad steam locomotive, B4a number 643, an 0-6-0. The 123 year-old steam locomotive hauled tourist trains on the Williams Grove Railroad's trackage, which is only around 2/3 of a mile long. Despite the short amount of trackage, this Pennsy steamer put on a phenomenal show. Unfortunately, our time here was cut short, following the 643 suffering a broken spring in the afternoon. For more information on the Williams Grove Historical Steam Engine Association, please visit their website: https://www.wghsea.org/ PRR 643 History (from the Williams Grove Railroad website): "Built in 1901 by the Pennsylvania Railroad, No. 643 is a class B4A 0-6-0 switcher. She was among the last of the B4 yard switchers built. When built, 643 was of a design near obsolescence, at least as far as the PRR was concerned. By the end of the decade, the B4 type switchers were already being replaced by the larger, more powerful B6 series that would remain the predominant 6-wheel switcher for the PRR until the end of steam in 1957. By 1917, the PRR had declared 643 as surplus and she was put up for sale. The Central Iron and Steel Company in Harrisburg, PA, purchased 643 from the PRR. For the next 40 years she worked day in and day out for Central and it's successor company, Phoenix Iron and Steel. While 643 was at the Central, she was renumbered to No. 5, and at some point the original tender was replaced with a larger welded boiler. The steel mill closed in 1959 and 643 sat until purchased by WGHSEA in 1961."
