For the first time in several years, we ventured out to capture some Class I action on Norfolk Southern's Harrisburg Line. The clear blue skies provided adequate natural lighting for capturing a day in modern mainline railroading. AC44C6Ms are becoming more prominent across the Norfolk Southern system, as more General Electric C44-9Ws are rebuilt at various shops across the eastern United States by NS. The Harrisburg Line is a mainline freight corridor that runs between Philadelphia, Reading, and Harrisburg. The line was constructed between Philadelphia and Reading in 1838 by the Philadelphia & Reading Rail Road, and between Reading and Harrisburg in 1858 by the Lebanon Valley Railroad. Both companies became part of the Reading Company in 1924, who operated the lines as two separate divisions: the Main Line (Philly and Reading) and the Lebanon Valley Branch (Reading and Harrisburg). On April 1, 1976, following the Reading Company being absorbed into the Conrail system, both divisions were united to form the Harrisburg Line. Following the breakup of Conrail on June 1, 1999, Norfolk Southern took over operations on the Harrisburg Line, and continues to use the line today for various trains.
