Tsurugi no Mai - Japanese Sword Dance at Yakumo Hikawa Shrine Annual Festival

Tsurugi-no-Mai is an ancient sword dance related to the god of Yakumo Hikawa Shrine in Meguro. The enshrined god is Susanoo-no-Mikoto is the turbulent Storm God who is brother to Amaterasu Omikami, the Sun Goddess and divine ancestor of the Imperial family. Susanoo encountered an 8-headed dragon known as Yamata no Orochi. He slew the dragon and found a sword in its tail. He named the sword Ame-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi (Heavenly Sword of Gathering Clouds) and presented it to his sister deity. This sword would become one of the three Imperial Regalia of Japan. In later times, the hero Yamato Takeru used the sword to cut grass and drive a fire made by his enemies back at them. He renamed the sword Kusanagi no Tsurugi. This sword is enshrined at Atsuta Shrine in Nagoya. Tsurugi-no-Mai is performed at Yakumo Hikawa Shrine during their Annual Festival in September. #japan #sword #dance
