Kagura is sacred Shinto dances that entertain the gods and depict various stories from ancient tales. Yamata no Orochi is a popular kagura dance that tells the story of Susanoo no Mikoto the Storm God slaying the dragon Yamata no Orochi. Susanoo saved the last daughter of a pair of earthly deities from the dragon by getting it drunk on sake. When he chopped up the dragon, Susanoo discovered a sword in its tail which would become one of the three Imperial Regalia of Japan. This kagura is performed in September at Yakumo Hikawa Shrine in Meguro for their annual festival. #Japan #dance #mask
