So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood.” I have heard some pastors say that the Bible does not say that there is a commandment to tithe in the New Testament, but rather we are just supposed to give to the Lord. They generally get this concept because the Apostle Paul collected money from churches to help the poor Christians in Jerusalem, but this is giving not tithing. I believe that tithing is still expected of Christians, but giving is from the heart to help those in need. It is kind of like this: In the Old Testament the tithe was to support the Levites, who did not work, but maintained the temple. In the New Testament period, the tithe would support the pastor and the upkeep of the church building, so he would not have to work, but serve the Lord continually. Churches today have gotten so large that there many who are paid through the contributions of members, both pastors and staff. In some countries, there is what is called a "church tax", where the state exacts a tax from the citizens to give to the churches in their country. This is to replace the need of a tithe, and so the state supports the church, not the members of the church. Here is a list of the countries that pay a church tax: Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
