Tithing and Poverty | It's the right thing to do |

Hi, we referenced a Biblical Minimalism by Cheryl Smith. If you want, you can buy one on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Biblical-Minim... Below are a few of the many references to tithing in the Bible: Genesis 14:21 "And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” And he (Abraham) gave him (Melchizedek) a tithe of all. Leviticus 27:30 And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord’s. It is holy to the Lord. (This is a tithe of produce, not money) Malachi 3:8-10 “Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, ‘In what way have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings. You are cursed with a curse, For you have robbed Me, Even this whole nation. Bring all the tithes into the storehouse. That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this,” Says the Lord of hosts, “If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing That there will not be room enough to receive it." Matthew 23:23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone." (They tithed out of obedience, but neglected to love their neighbor as themselves) Mark 12:41-44 Now Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. And many who were rich put in much. Then one poor widow came and threw in two [o]mites, which make a [p]quadrans. So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood.” I have heard some pastors say that the Bible does not say that there is a commandment to tithe in the New Testament, but rather we are just supposed to give to the Lord. They generally get this concept because the Apostle Paul collected money from churches to help the poor Christians in Jerusalem, but this is giving not tithing. I believe that tithing is still expected of Christians, but giving is from the heart to help those in need. It is kind of like this: In the Old Testament the tithe was to support the Levites, who did not work, but maintained the temple. In the New Testament period, the tithe would support the pastor and the upkeep of the church building, so he would not have to work, but serve the Lord continually. Churches today have gotten so large that there many who are paid through the contributions of members, both pastors and staff. In some countries, there is what is called a "church tax", where the state exacts a tax from the citizens to give to the churches in their country. This is to replace the need of a tithe, and so the state supports the church, not the members of the church. Here is a list of the countries that pay a church tax: Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
