Punjab, meaning the land of 5 rivers is a state in North India with a very long history. Hinduism dominated the region since the Vedic age and is the oldest recorded religion in the region. During early half of the 1st millennium CE, Scythians, Northern Kshtrapas, Hunas, etc foreigner kingdoms ruled the region and were mostly Buddhist kings though many were also Hindus. The Hindu Huna King Mihirakula is responsible for the mass decline of Buddhism from Punjab region. Jains were also found in large numbers. The last period of the 1st millennium saw the rise of Hindu Shahis in Punjab. In 1001 CE Punjab came under the hands of Mahmud Ghazni through conquest and many Punjabis were converted to Islam. Islam declined a bit after Punjab came under Hindu rule again. But the same happened with the establishment of Delhi Sultanate and Timur's invasion and Muslims became a large minority. In 1526 CE, Babur captured the region and established the Mughal Empire in India. Punjab became Muslim majority because of conversions. Sikhism was founded by Guru Nanak around 1500 CE.Sikhs headed by their 10 Gurus were persecuted during Mughal rule. Many Punjabis, both Hindus and Muslims accepted the new faith. With the fall of Mughal rule in Punjab, many Punjabis converted to Sikhism. The Maratha-Afghan wars caused many deaths in Punjab and the Vadda Ghalaghara massacre by Afghans in 1762 took lives of many Sikhs. The establishment of Sikh Empire saw rise of both Hinduism and Sikhism, though Dalit and Jatt conversion of Hindus to Sikhism continued. Punjab became a Muslim-Sikh-Hindu plurality state. Punjab was annexed by British in 1849 after the Anglo-Sikh wars. Low-caste Punjabi Hindus continued to convert to Sikhism, Christianity and Islam but kept on growing. Punjab was the worst partition affected state in India, and the partition saw a massive migration of Punjabi Muslims to the new country Pakistan and immigration of West Punjabi Hindus and Sikhs to East Punjab in India. Today Punjab is the only Sikh majority subdivision of India, but has a very large Hindu minority. Music in this video- 1. Jarico- Landscape [NCS Fanmade] Watch: • Видео 2.
