Bangladesh is a country in South Asia. Bangladesh makes up the Eastern half of the Bengal region, the western part being part of India. Anciently Bangladesh was dominated by Hindu Vedic kingdoms like Vanga (after which Bengal region is named), Pundra, etc. Few regions like Sylhet, Chittagong, etc had a good Animist population. Bengal was a stronghold of Buddhism, which had become very much popular in the region because of the Mauryan Empire and the nearby region of Magadha, the cradle of Buddhism. There was also a good Jain population in Bengal. The legendary Bengali Hindu King Shashanka's empire saw a decline in Buddhist population in Bengal because as per sources Shashanka was cruel towards Buddhists. But Buddhism made a peaceful but a very strong revival during another strong Bengali empire, the Pala Empire, of which most rulers were Buddhists. Bangladesh eventually became Buddhist majority. Shaivism was also promoted during Pala rule. Many Animists converted to Dharmic faiths. After the fall of Pala Empire, Bengal came under rule of Hindu kingdoms like the Sena dynasty, Deva dynasty, etc. In the early 13th century, Muhammad Ghori's general Muhammad Bin Bakhtiyar Khalji invaded Bihar and Bengal, and caused mass threat to the Dharmic religions, especially Buddhism in the region with mass conversions to Islam. Many Buddhists fled to other countries while many people converted to Islam. Eventually the Bengal Sultanate was established. Hinduism made a growth during the Ganesha dynasty but with the Mughal conquest of Bengal in 1560s and the previous Suri empire, Bangladesh became Muslim majority. Due to high growth rate, Islam grew at a very fast rate in Bangladesh. Bengal came under British rule after the Battle of Plassey in 1757, soon followed by a large famine (1769-1771). Bengal was mass centre of nationalist movement during British rule. Bengal was divided into two halves in 1947 after the end of British rule, and the Eastern half, the Muslim majority half was given to Pakistan. Many Hindus and Buddhists (especially from Chittagong Hill tracts) migrated to India. Bangladesh achieved it's independence from Pakistan after a civil war, and also a genocide on Bengalis, in 1971. Today Bangladesh is a large Muslim country (over 91% Bangladeshis are Muslims and their population is more than 150 million). Music in the video- 1.
