Falkbeer Countergambit | King’s Gambit Opening Theory

The Falkbeer is a very unsound way to decline the King’s Gambit. Black declines a pawn by sacrificing one of his own! For an introduction to the King’s Gambit, watch this video on the basics, main ideas and common variations in the opening:    • King’s Gambit | Ideas, Principles and...   The King’s Gambit is a very aggressive opening. White gives up a flank pawn in order to disrupt black’s central control and to get rid of his e5 pawn. Nevertheless, taking the f4 pawn and accepting the gambit is the best way for black to play. Declining the gambit is playable, but it’s not considered critical, and it doesn’t challenge white enough. There are two main variations of the Declined King’s Gambit. Bc5, the Classical, and d5, the Falkbeer Countergambit. The idea behind the move is simple, you challenge the center instead of accepting the sacrifice. D5 immediately pressures white’s center and fights for control over the key squares. There are three ways for black to play the position: 3...exf4 is the main move, and it simply transposes to the Modern Defense in the KGA (video here:    • Modern Defense | King’s Gambit Openin...  ), so it’s not really declining the gambit. 3...c6 Nimzowitsch Counter Gambit is the most aggressive way for black to play. Black gives a pawn to white now! He accepts to be a pawn down in most lines and goes for quick development and piece activity (not that he manages to achieve that). I believe that white is fine. 3...e4 Staunton Line is a weird variation which is visually dangerous for white, but if white knows what he’s doing it’s harmless. #chess #chessopenings #kingsgambit
