Classical Variation of the King’s Gambit Declined

The Classical Variation is the best and most popular way to decline the aggressive King’s Gambit. You simply don’t take the f4 pawn, but develop a bishop to a good square instead! The idea behind the opening is to prevent white from castling and developing normally. Black contests the a7-g1 diagonal and white has to do something about that. Even though it all sounds pretty for black in theory, white has a fairly straightforward plan to break that bind on the position and expand in the center with advantage. After the normal opening moves 1. e4 e5 2. f4 Bc5 3. Nf3 d6, white gets to choose between two main continuations. One is to play Nc3, preparing to play Bc4 and achieve active play, and the other is to prepare the move d4 with 4. c3! This is, in my opinion, a very sound approach, and it results in very comfortable positions for white. There is basically nothing black can do about c3 and d4, which means that his bishop is condemned to the b6 or to the a7 square, stuck behind white’s strong pawn center. Despite this, black does achieve something with the Classical Variation. He avoids all the sharp theory which he would have to know if he accepted the King’s Gambit with exf4. Still, I believe that Bc5 is not a good move for black. It doesn’t give black anything and the position is equal, which should never be the case in the King’s Gambit! Black is supposed to be better until proven otherwise! All the games which I analyzed, in which black won, seemed to have been going in white’s favor out of the opening, and black only won because of a blunder. That means that the opening is quite one sided. Still, it’s a must know variation for any King’s Gambit player. Good luck playing it! #chess #kingsgambit #chessopenings
