More thoughts + full packing list 👇🏼

Last year we completed our first 14er, Mt. Elbert and we have learned a LOT since then. We have completed 12, with a Class 3 being the highest difficulty we’ve attempted so far. This summer we hope to add at least 20 more summits to our list. One of the most important things we realized early on was to get an early start. Some of the peaks will have unpredictable storms roll in each afternoon and you do NOT want to be caught at a high elevation when the storm hits. We typically will leave the trailhead from 2am - 430am, depending on the route. When we first started learning about these, I just assumed all of the 14ers would be hikes, but just like a really hard hike, right? Not quite… There is a lot more to these than following a path up a mountain. As you go up in class difficulty they start to involve scrambling, route finding, climbing, technical skills and knowledge. We like to backpack any route that is over 16 miles (if possible) since those make for a looong day when you do it all at once. For that packing list, we pack as we would a normal backpacking trip, and bring our daypacks and helmets strapped on the outside of our pack. These are sometimes my favorite way to do the 14ers since you get to break up the hike and actually can hang out at camp ☺️ Full packing list below 🥾 Ultimate Direction 30L Fastpack (my favorite daypack) Headlamp Sunscreen Snacks Water (always bring more than you think you need) Water filter (depending on the route) Nalgene with @Nuun Hydration Kula cloth Wag bag Mittens or gloves (depending on the route) Shell pants or rain pants @Cotopaxi down jacket Beanie Layers Rain jacket Extra socks Hat Sunglasses @Pit Viper always First aid kit Compass, fire starter, space blanket Knife Bear spray @Garminoutdoor inReach Mini 2 satellite phone Micro spikes Poles Helmet (if route involves unstable rock) #lifeontheroad #14ers #14ersofcolorado #packingtips #backpackinggear #packwithme #hikingbackpack
