Auteurs in the ether | Alan Palomo | TEDxMarthasVineyard

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Alan Palomo explores the myth of the Auteur in two extremes: the autocrat who looks to himself, and the collaborator who looks everywhere else. By musing on the process of his musical project Neon Indian, he answers the question: If your inspiration comes from an inner monologue or an open dialogue, does either one make it any less original an expression? Alan Palomo is a Mexican born, Texas raised music producer known for his work under the moniker Neon Indian. His 2009 critically acclaimed debut Psychic Chasms placed him on various year end lists including the likes of Pitchfork and Rolling Stone. Neon Indian’s idiosyncratic approach to hypnagogic, tape affected electronic music has helped define an internet music genre explicated by such pop culture essayists as Simon Reynolds in his book, Retromania. Since then, the narrative of his work has taken him through an array of multimedia projects such as collaborating with The Flaming Lips, directing a short film commissioned by MOCA Los Angeles, and co-designing his own synthesizer. At 26, he has already made numerous television appearances on such TV shows as Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Yo Gabba Gabba, and Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations. He currently resides in Brooklyn, NY. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
