This cover has been like 3 months in the making but it's finally here. Def one of the most complex undertakings I've attempted but I'm proud with the result, hope yall enjoy! Can't even lie this took me forever since I just didn't know how I wanted to approach this. When I make these covers I usually listen to the original on loop and try to think of how I'd flip whatever I'm hearing in a jazzier context. This one was a bit difficult due to the speed and overall complexity of the piece so it took a lot more time to contextualize ideas in my head that would sound good in a jazz format. Luckily a friend of mine who plays bass was also a big fan of the song so we would practice from time and time and those practices helped a lot for figuring out different phrases and ideas. It also gave me enough confidence to start soloing over the changes again. In the past two covers for this year, I had planned out solos in the recording phases but just didn't like how they came out and scrapped them from the final cut. Looking back I kinda wish I just did it anyways but I was a kinda insecure about sounding bad. No point in being scared of failing though, it's the main you grow, right? Inspiration this time was def straight from the Consouls arrangement of this song. I liked the direction they took things in their cover but I also wanted to be really sure I didn't just copy paste the idea so I spent a good amount of time thinking about how I'd go about laying down the sections and programming the drums. The past couple of covers I'd been listening to a lot of japanese fusion for inspiration but this time around I went a different route. Jacob Collier, Stevie Wonder, Chick Corea, and Joshua Milo were my study sources this past month and I tried emulating a bit of their styles in different parts of the song. Not sure if it's noticeable at all or not tho lol. I've been taking a music production course in school so I've been working on the more technical side of my covers overall. I'm slowly learning about mixing, mastering, EQs, etc. so I'm hoping that implementing these concepts will elevate the quality of the covers slowly but surely. Keeping to the VGM nature of the songs, I think I'm gonna start looping all my covers at least once so you can kinda hear where things come full circle. Jazz standards aren't really too different in my experience so it'll be good practice, but of course I'll break my own rules when I think it would be cool stylistically. If you made it to the bottom of this description/explanation/rambling session, I appreciate you a lot. The channel growth been kinda crazy these past few months and while my life is starting to get busier, I got no plans on slowing down. I also know I said I'd do an Engage cover but I just am really bad at sticking to plans when it comes to my cover ideas so my bad lol. I'll be strongly looking at the direction of Engage for next month but I've got something else cooking lowkey so at this point dawg whatever happens, happens. That's all from me tho, stay safe out there and catch yall next month. Thank you for listening as always!
