Great Loop & Looper Boats

During our day's cruising both through the Trent Severn Waterway and Georgian Bay, we regularly pass by boaters who are doing the Great Loop. What is this Great Loop, you ask? Well, it's an incredible 6,000 mile long voyage that one can take aboard their own boat which will generally go through the following route; Starting in Florida, the Intracoastal Waterway takes one northward past Georgia and the Carolinas, Chesapeake Bay, onward to New Jersey and past the Statue of Liberty in New York City. From there, it's up the Hudson River to the Erie Canal, west and then north to Oswego NY where the route meets Lake Ontario. Then, it's up to and through the Trent Severn Waterway, Georgian Bay, over to Lake Michigan, and down to Chicago. Once past Chicago, the journey finds its way through the Illinois River, Mississippi down past St Louis and east along the Ohio River to the Tenn-Tom Waterway. from that point it's south to the Gulf of Mexico, entering at Mobile, Alabama. once south of there, it's on to Florida, where the circle begins again! That long winded explanation of The Loop leads us to the term Loopers, which is simply the name given to those lucky folks who are enjoying their Loop cruise!
