"The Colors of Us" Self Portrait

After reading the book, "The Colors of Us," by Karen Katz, students will learn about mixing black, yellow, white and red to create their own unique skin color for this two-week long lesson. Students will broaden their vocabulary to include words like cinnamon, chocolate, peach and apricot to describe the different skin colors they see around them. Every student should have access to a mirror, so they can closely study their own skin color before mixing their paint. For this lesson I used tempera, but you could also use water colors.
