AIDA Seminars - Autonomous Mobile Robots and Related Technologies–Advoard Robotics-Pınar Oğuz Ekim

Abstract: Recently, mobile robotic applications where the robots are able to perform different kinds of tasks have significantly increased in households and industry. A mobile robot must be capable of navigating safely through an unknown environment while simultaneously carrying out the task it has been designed for. Fusing the information, which come from different sensors, in a reliable and an efficient way is the solution of localization problem or many more robotic problems. Robot Operating System (ROS) is an open source meta- operating system that provides a message passing structure between different processes (or nodes) across a network (inter- process communication). The benefits of ROS include being an ecosystem that allows to introduce a new sensor (or a node) easily and to have simultaneous data from different sensors. The mentioned benefits lead to easy implementation of different sensor fusion techniques and to combine various hardware components. In this talk, we will talk about autonomous mobile robots and the related technologies. Bio: Dr. Pinar Oguz Ekim has a Bachelor Degree in the area of Telecommunication and Computer and a Master Degree in the area of Circuit and Systems at the Department of Electrical and Electronics from Middle East Technical University (METU), Turkey in 2003 and 2006 respectively. During her master degree, she worked three years as a Research Engineer at TUBITAK-SAGE in the Navigation Division. She defended her PhD thesis and passed with Distinction in September 2013 at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of ISR-IST, Lisbon, Portugal. In her PhD, she focused on localization and tracking algorithms in sensor networks. Owing to these works, she won 2012 IBM Scientific Award which is the most prestigious national award in Portugal. She worked as a lecturer in Gebze Technical University (GTU), Turkey between February 2014 to July 2015. From August 2015 to October 2016, She was a research fellow in School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore where she worked on Development of NTU/NXP- Intelligent Transport Systems Test-Bed. She has been working as an Asst. Prof. at the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering of İzmir University of Economics. She is a co-founder of Arvoard Robotics which develops autonomous mobile platforms for picking and transporting the orders in the e-commerce warehouses. Her research interests are centralized and distributed localization and tracking algorithms in sensor and vehicular networks, sensor fusion, optimization theory, estimation theory, nonlinear signal processing and navigation systems.
