In this video, we take a look at some of the early self-loading (semi-auto) rifles used by various militaries around the world from World War I through World War II. Here we're interested in guns that were actually produced in large numbers and that saw at least some use in combat. We begin with the French RSC M1917 in 8mm Lebel, and then move onto the American M1 Garand in .30-06, Soviet-Russian SVT-38 & 40 Tokarev in 7.62x54R, Nazi-German G41 in 8mm Mauser, and Swedish AG42 'Ljungman' in 6.5x55mm. Then we get into the next generation of the German G43/K43 also in 8mm Mauser, French MAS M1944 in 7.5x54mm, and wrap things up with the last true self-loading battle rifle; the Belgian FN SAFN-49 (which was built for several calibers). This type of firearm partially replaced the smokeless powder bolt action during WWII, and in turn was made obsolete by the intermediate cartridge and what we know today as the assault rifle.
