The Lilliputters Guild - Kent Weekend - Part 2b - Sunday 9 June 2019 (Harrietsham & Hollingbourne)

The final video from The Lilliputters’ Guild Weekend in Kent saw us move out of Maidstone, after a long and entertaining brunch break, into the wilderness of the “Garden of England”. Harrietsham was first up, and upon arrival we just had to make our by-now traditional human pyramid – whilst Aaron found a gooose! The church is a fine building, and dates in parts from the 11th century. As for the bells…. I have to say, these were one of the grimmest eights I have ever been to! The bells were cast by Thomas Lester in 1742; four of these survive today, with the tenor recast by Warners in 1885 and the 2,3 and 6 recast by Mears subsequently. They were last rehung and retuned by Mears in 1926, and handle OK, albeit a bit lumpy and with some tower movement hindering things! Tonally, the bells are shrill and harsh, and the low ceiling creates a wishy-washy bathroom effect! Some Grandsire is performed here; we also managed Cambridge and Stedman, once Ashley had worked out he was on the 6, not the 7 – he tripped, Officer! http://kent.lovesguide.com/tower.php?... Our final tower of the weekend was the grand eight at Hollingbourne, where I was delighted to see Grandsire Major in the quarter peal book – and of course we had to ring it too! Some fine call changes are also featured here, and we also rang our well-practiced “forwards-backwards” routine. The back six were cast in 1723 by Samuel Knight, rehung in 1975 by Whitechapel, and augmented in 2016 by the same firm. They handle well and sound good, although Euan did enjoy dancing with his rope – punishment for not pulling straight! :P http://kent.lovesguide.com/tower.php?... Finally, it was onto the station and homewards – although Ashley may have struggled to listen to any radio on his drive home! Thanks for watching, and to Alex for his hard work in pulling a challenging weekend together!
