The Lilliputters Guild - Kent Weekend (Part 2a - Sunday 9 June 2019 - Maidstone)

Footage from the Sunday morning of The Lilliputters’ Guild Weekend in Kent, where we were met by Steph and Josephine, and made very welcome at both Maidstone towers (thanks to Graham and Jacqueline for accommodating us!). Considering the night’s sleep (or lack of!) we had had, we were fairly sprightly – or maybe it was the vast amount of sugar Ashley put on his Rice Krispies (after throwing tea all over me!). Rocking the Euanmerch, we have now set new heights in fashion (although David opted for the colourful Guild polo; an excellent choice too, may I add!) First up was perhaps the highlight of the weekend – the glorious heavy Taylor ten of All Saints, Maidstone. Set in an attractive spot on the River Medway, the church is an impressive building – dubbed the “grandest Perpendicular style church in Kent”, and was founded in 1395 by William Courtenay, then Archbishop of Canterbury. The tower, unusually set at the south west of the church and also built in 1395, stands at 78 foot (24m) tall; the spire was destroyed by lightning in 1730! The ten bells were cast by Taylors in 1957, and replaced an earlier, slightly lighter (28cwt), ring of ten, cast by Chapman and Mears, and hung anti-clockwise! Whilst not easy to ring – with a long (60-odd foot) of draught from ringing room to bells, and a smallish tower width-wise, they are worth every ounce of effort for the glorious noise they make! Some of the service touch, Plain Bob Royal, is captured here, filmed by Alex Runting. http://kent.lovesguide.com/tower.php?... Our other Sunday morning ringing was the Victorian church of St Michael’s Maidstone, about a mile to the west of the town, and the polar opposite of what we had just rung! The light eight were installed in 1979, and replaced a minor six (cast by Warners in 1876-8). These were recast by Whitechapel to form the front seven; the tenor bell was cast by Gillett & Johnston in 1933, and was acquired from St Paul, Penge. Whilst they sound pretty, they are not easy to ring, being very light-set and quite flighty round the front, despite the short draught. Ringing here includes Grandsire Triples and Bob Major inside, and a short snap of some call-changes outside. http://kent.lovesguide.com/tower.php?... Morning ringing completed, it was brunch back in town – once we got there of course; it would not be a Lilliputters Weekend without someone getting us lost, and Josephine obliged by taking us on a goose chase round the town! Sunday afternoon video will follow soon; thanks for watching! :-)
