Kane Longplay (C64) [50 FPS]

Developed by John Darnell and published by Mastertronic in 1985. Released for the meagre sum of £1.99, the player takes control of an unnamed Sheriff who is on a mission to bring stability to the lawless west. The game consists of four different mini-games: 1) Shooting birds with bow and arrow: killing birds earns "peace tokens", which take the place of lives. This first stage allows the player the opportunity to earn bonus lives for the other stages. The stage ends when too many birds escape or the player uses all of their arrows; I hurry things along by using up all my arrows when I realised that the stage was never going to end. 2) Horse Riding: the player must reach the town of Kane whilst getting his trusty steed to jump over bushes, rocks and other obstacles. Most players will remember these stages due to the painstaking precision required to clear obstacles; if part of the horse clips an obstacle then the sheriff is thrown from the horse and loses a life. 3) Gun-fight: probably everybody's favourite stage. The objective here is to move the reticule around the screen and shoot the bad guys as they appear. Although limited to six shots, it's possible to rearm by running to the right of the screen. 4) Train Chase: more horse riding this time, but the objective this time is to reach the engine whilst avoiding obstacles. The trick to beating this stage is to not travel too fast and to learn the pattern of obstacles and to time jumps correctly. If the player manages to complete all four stages, the game restarts but increases the difficulty level. Once the third difficulty level has been beaten, the player is treated to an ending screen of a very tiny president sat behind a very large desk in a very empty room, who proceeds to congratulate the player. It might sound like I'm knocking the quality of the ending, but to get an ending in a game at all, let alone a budget title, was certainly a rarity back in 1985. More eagle-eyed watchers might notice that the main sheriff sprite bares an uncanny resemblance to the main sprite from Impossible Mission, even down to the running animation. Whether the sprite was stolen or copied, it's difficult not to notice the similarity, but it's still very well animated all the same. At £1.99, Kane offered fantastic value for money and is a game that I would expect most players to look back at fondly, even with the horrible horse riding stages. #retrogaming
