MASSIVE Fox 201 Side-by-side

This video compares Fox 201's from: 1968-69, 1997, 2014. Please check out Jessi's awesome resource: www.teachbassoon.com It was so wonderful to have a bassoonist present for this side-by-side! I kept a lot of our conversation in this video in hopes that the viewer might gain some insight into what factors I'm considering, listening for as I try these bassoons. Jessi gave great feedback and helped to keep me accountable as I switched between instruments. With all the variables (reeds and bocals) it's really important to attempt to play as consistently as possible. I didn't realize it at the time, but now listening, my dynamics were inconsistent! With Jessi's help pointing it out, I re-did a few of these excerpts but there are still obvious differences in my own playing. There are SO MANY variables in trying bassoons. What you should know about this video is: less than two hours after landing in Salt Lake City after a week of playing in Seattle, I was trying these borrowed (not for sale) Fox 201's. This includes a 4,000 foot change in elevation. However, I think you can still discern differences in the instruments. This isn't a great angle for video but I had to be plugged into a wall and my tripod was buried in a suitcase which I couldn't find fast enough. I was trying to go as quickly as possible due to the fact that I descended upon the lives of two families trying to enjoy their Sunday family time. HUGE thank you to Mollie and Jessi who allowed me to play and compare their instruments! I think it's a vulnerable thing to do, turn your instrument over to another bassoonist and let them pick it apart.
