All war is futile and tragic but Thucydides captures this notion better than most. Dispensing with divine causes, he shows that fate is the absurdity of the interaction of out interests. Humans act with purpose yet the outcome of that chaotic mix of intentions has no meaning. We may assume economic, religious or territorial reasons for wars, but what comes out of the mix is never what was intended. States, empires and tyrants will always try to impose their will through violent means, yet their hubris and lack of foresight will always lead to consequences beyond their imagining and power to contain, as Thucydides acutely predicted that we would see time and time again. I tried to mic up the lyre again, and although this recording's sound quality is better, it has a certain annoying ringing sound to it, which I'll hopefully remedy next time... It's all a learning process!
