This track started off as a lyre jam around the original Orestes fragment using different lyre techniques such as plucking, block 'n strum, drone, tremolo and plectrum scratching. The overall effect is to create a new lyre style that is both relaxing and meditative yet full of the dynamism of modern rock music. Of course, this music is classical reception, meaning that it is new music based on the ancient and as we only have a few fragments that survive we obviously need to use our creativity in both interpreting the sources and also in expanding upon them. My work is primarily then, focused on the production of modern music with archaic instruments, creating a sound that would never have actually existed in antiquity. This is very much a modern take on the ancient world, or the past as seen through the eyes of the present. Others have focused more on reproducing, as accurately as they can, what the fragments may have sounded like and this is great work too. However, I think there is also space for new music that continues the tradition. It is in that tension between ancient and modern where my music sits and hopefully still brings vitally to the listener, beyond a mere disinterested curiosity about the past.
