There are three main types of hiatal hernia, which include sliding hiatal hernia (95%), para-esophageal hiatal hernia (5%), and mixed Hiatal hernias (rare). Dr. Sameer Islam explains that most hernias are asymptomatic. Patients with sliding hernias may present with GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease). Typically hiatal hernia is diagnosed by incidental finding on CXR and frequently diagnosed by barium swallow or EGD. Dr. Sameer Islam describes that medical therapy and lifestyle modifications to decrease GERD symptoms are the treatment approaches to sliding hernias. Surgical gastropexy is the treatment of choice for para-esophageal hernias.
