Genetic Identification and Diversity of North American Bladderworts (Utricularia)

Bladderworts (Utricularia) are a diverse group of carnivorous plants, comprising about 270 species around the world. In North America there are just 20 species, but they represent almost half of the taxonomic sections of Utricularia. Bladderworts can be difficult to identify, particularly in the absence of reproductive features, and DNA sequence data can be a valuable resource for identifying plants at any life stage. We built a robust set of reference data for North American bladderworts and used it to identify species in a phylogenetic context. Dr. Nic Tippery is a professor of Biology at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where he studies the phylogenetic relationships of various aquatic plant groups.
