Mamiya 7 Film Photography On a Foggy Morning | Portra 400 + Delta 100

Shooting landscape photography in a local environment + a discussion about finding inspiration. All the images were shot on either Portra 400 or Ilford Delta 100 on the Mamiya 7. It was actually the first time I have shot black and white film on this camera, and I’m so happy with how it turned out. I think I prefer the compositions from the portra rolls, but the black and white suits the mood a little more, but it’s nice to have a bit of a mix. So I was lucky enough to take some photos in a local park the other week which had really nice fog coverage creating some really interesting photos. Normally, I work more in a run-and-gun kind of way but decided to change up my process a little bit. Recently, I have come across a lot of traditional landscape photographers on this platform, and while normally this isn’t really my style I thought I would give it a go. So I got up early, packed my bag, and went to this location just before sunrise. I want to make it clear that I am very lucky to have this sort of environment not too far from my home, but the point of this video is to discuss why it’s so important that we all look to our own surroundings first before we look elsewhere to make work. I for one am always guilty of wanting to travel in order to take photos, but this becomes a real trope if it’s the sole reason you make images. Every time I come back from overseas, for example, I always find myself with some form of creative block as everything around me becomes far less interesting than anywhere else I have been. And this can become quite dangerous as we shouldn’t have to rely on traveling in order to create good work. I won’t go into too much detail but just quickly here are some contemporary photographers that all work within this social landscape. So, Alec Soth who mainly documents communities, Todd Hido who, is most known for his nighttime long exposures of houses, Lee Friedlander who covers all things in suburban life, Cyndy Sherman who made a lot of work in her apartment and Richard Avedon who is known for his on-location studio portraits using natural light. There are obviously thousands of people similar to this, but those are some of the more famous ones. I will have all their links down below if you want to check them out. Don’t worry if you don’t have the latest camera, or nice studio setup, the most creative people I believe are the ones that can make something out of nothing, and this applies to not just photography but most things in life. If all you have is an iPhone and a bedsheet, that’s enough to do some studio portraits. If you only have a $3 point and shoot from an op shop, that is enough to start a street photography project. The list really goes on and on, so the point I am trying to make is don’t be discouraged if you don’t have the right equipment or locations, just make do with what you can for the time being, and then if necessary, invest into something later on when the time is right. So as you saw at the start of this video, I decided to go for a walk through my local area to take some photos. I wasn’t after anything specific but just the exercise of working in a nearby and familiar area really forced me to think differently about my surroundings. I began to really focus on the small details, like the wet grass, the trees, and local wildlife which previously I wouldn’t even have cared about. Just the process of carrying a camera flips a switch inside of my head and I immediately go into photo mode. I start looking for compositions and possible photos which I could never have thought of if I didn’t have my camera with me.
