Mega Drill Rods Getting Torqued Up To 65,000 ft lbs (So They'll NEVER Come Undone)

We are assembling 30 x one tonne drill rods for our big rig. We've spent the last three months machining up all the tool joints and rods, and it's finally time for them to come together. We'll be using a customised set of 20" Weatherford power tongs (often seen on big oilfield rigs) to torque the rods up to 65,000 ft lbs, and they'll be locked in using JetLok (a powerful thread locker that's like liquid steel). We'll also be using one of the big rigs to torque up the drive sub into the head unit before it gets sent off for final assembly. Everything you see in this video will be used to power a 3.0m (just under 10 ft) diameter Mega Drill which will be digging 250m deep underground rescue and ventilation shafts for the Australian mining industry. If you're new to the channel, you can check out a bunch of the previous videos that'll bring you up to speed. Considering we started out doing small diameter water bores in the 1960's... this project is insane... ...and a whole lot of fun! About HAL Heavy Duty: We're a real life machine shop for a 60 year old drilling company located in Central Qld, Australia. Our job is to keep rigs running in the field, constantly making the gear they need to get the job done. We run two CNC's, manual repair lathes, mills and are constantly having to make weird and wonderful shop made tools to get the job done. We're a little shop that takes on big projects. The latest is our MEGADRILL project where we're manufacturing a 3.0m drill bit that'll weigh upward of 20 tonnes. We release one video a week (usually on Friday/Saturday) to give you all a window into our heavy duty world. #australianmachinist #machinistlife #machineshoplife #cnclife #heavydutyequipment #australiandrilling
