Big Rig Drive Sub | Megabore Lathe | CNC Machining

It's been a crazy week in the shop! In this video we machine up the largest drill sub the company has ever made from a 1 tonne billet of 4140 steel. It's a pin to pin sub that will be screwed onto the drive flange of our custom big rig - an absolute monster of a machine designed to drill very large diameter holes for underground mining ventilation and rescue using reverse circulation (RC) compressed air. To get the job done, we'll be using both THE HULK (our Spanish Gurutzpe Megabore) and HAL (our Colchester Alpha 1760 CNC). TOOLS WE'LL BE USING Kennametal HTS 130mm Drill 120mm Diameter, 900mm Long Custom Boring Bar (TINY) We chose to drill rather than build a Trepanning tool. This job is a one-off, and our trepanning tool just wont reach. We chose the HTS instead, as it'll be a much more useful tool for future projects.
