The year was 1989. A British musical band manager by the name of Nigel Martin-Smith embarked on a journey to create a male vocal singing group he intended to model after popular U.S. boy band New Kids on the Block. He was soon introduced to young singer-songwriter Gary Barlow, who’d been performing in clubs since the age of 15. Impressed with Gary’s writing abilities, Nigel decided to make him the focal point of the group. The following year, a campaign was launched in Manchester, as well as other surrounding cities, to find young men who could sing and dance.18-year-old football hopeful, or soccer depending on which part of the world you’re from, Mark Owen would be next to enter the picture and together with Gary started calling themselves The Cutest Rush.
