Transmission conversion from original Muncie M20 over to a Muncie M22. This video attempts to demonstrate the difference in the gear whine sound between the various kinds of the 1960's Muncie transmissions. It also shows some comparative images of the earlier 1960's Muncie M20, M21, and M22 transmissions. Generally, the quieter wide ratio M20 transmission was the best choice for street driving. The close ratio M21 and M22 transmissions had gear sets of the same ratios respectively, and were designed for road racing. The M22 transmission had a hardened gear set, with a more durable lesser gear helix angle. The lesser gear helix angle of the M22 transmission, caused it to make an aggressively loud sound when compared to the quieter M20 and M21 transmissions. It's more durable engineering made it a good choice for drag racing, particularly in high horsepower and torque situations. There were reportedly only around 12 1966 original factory built Chevrolet Chevelles, that came with the M22 Muncie transmission option.
