VFX Plane EXR Compositing - Full Tutorial for Maya, V-Ray, & After Effects [Deprecated Workflow]

Project files available on Patreon | Learn how to composite EXR sequences from Maya and V-Ray in After Effects. This is the full-length version of the six-part series about compositing a plane using Maya, V-Ray, Photoshop, and After Effects. This tutorial has six parts and is aimed at users with intermediate Maya skills and beginner to intermediate After Effects skills. Learn how to reference geometry, set up cameras with a suitable focal length, use expressions to animate turbulence, and do basic keyframing. Next, we set up a dome light with an HDRI and create materials using V-Ray. Also, learn how to use the V-Ray frame buffer, create aircraft metal, glass, and create and apply reflection maps correctly. Procedural noise and fractal patterns are covered as well. After that, create a simple alternative to a particle system by using basic geometry and deformers driven with an expression. This gives us a matte to use in After Effects. Continuing, we discuss render layers, render passes (elements), how to create an ambient occlusion pass, and set up a Z Depth pass properly. Also, learn how to batch rendering efficiently with layer overrides. Finally, we head over to After Effects to start compositing the EXR sequence. Learn how to interpret footage, linearize the working space, use the EXtractoR effect, the unmultiply effect, use a LUT color correction file from V-Ray, and use curves and Lumetri Color. We also composite exhaust and heat distortion using the exhaust matte we made earlier. We composite depth of field and atmospheric perspective using a Z Depth pass. Also, learn how to create bloom in V-Ray and After Effects, camera shake, and add film grain. At the end, we render out a preview file using the Media Encoder. *This series uses a deprecated sRGB workflow and non-PBR materials. The preferred color management workflow is to use ACEScg, which has been the default since Maya 2022. Please refer to the Razor Crest series for the ACEScg color management and PBR workflows.
