Wolf Creek

Wolf Creek is one of the few lower elevation trails within a wilderness area in northern Washington. As such, it is accessible way earlier than nearby areas, and offers one the chance to take a forest walk on the east side early in the spring. Unfortunately for us (but fortunately for the forest), the drainage burned as part of the Cedar Creek Fire in 2021. The forests needed to burn badly, but it does take away from the aesthetic of hiking through a green forest. It does, however, mean that you now get to walk through fields of many kinds of wildflowers in the springtime. We saw over a dozen different varieties on our hike, including many, many Heartleaf Arnica, Harsh Paintbrush, Ballhead Waterleaf and Glacier Lily. There was Alamo a literally sea of fireweed, but they were still a ways out from blooming. Most of the flowering was occurring within the first 2 miles of trail, with the Glacier Lily being at the crossing of North Fork Wolf Creek at 2.5 miles. We wanted to hike to where there was an old Patrol Cabin and then hang out by the creek, but when we got to the Basalt Ridge and beyond the trail was far above the creek. So after some searching, we didn’t find the cabins and retreated back to the alluvial fan at around 3 miles for lunch and our turnaround point. Overall, its a nice easy jaunt through the burnt out woods. You’ll get to enjoy seeing it recover and regrow - I did spot lots of tiny Ponderosa poking out from under the fireweed. And of course the wildflowers are out all spring.
