Every once in a while, you hype yourself up really good for a hike. This is dangerous because no matter how good the hike may be, it won’t ever meet those impossible expectations. Well, the hype was real for this, and it met them. The first 3 miles or so of the hike was in deep forest, without a larch to be seen. This is fine, as larches are secretive beings hiding in the highest, craggiest parts of the mountains. But once we got above the valley headwall and into the lake basin proper, the show was on. Thousands of golden orange larches everywhere, 2 gorgeous little emeralds for lakes, and the fierce, sharp and managing Sawtooth Ridge standing guard over it all. Both lakes were stellar, but for different reasons. The upper lake was wild and had an imposingly close backdrop from Sawtooth, whereas the lower lake was more of a grand spectacle of a setting. And I caught a handful of fish. If this is what the Chelan - Sawtooth Wilderness is all about, then I can’t wait to experience more of it. Sure, we may have had to wait and work for our larches, but sometimes, the wait just makes it better.
