The Mangapps Railway

This was one of the more difficult videos to film due to the shear number of artifacts in the museum. Everywhere you looked was railway memorabilia, every corner turned was a new exhibition. From Industrial steam locomotives to London Underground stock; from local goods wagons to Canadian brake vans, this museum has it all. I originally discovered this museum after watching the 2002 TV series "Trainspotting" and the music video for the song "Night Mail" by Public Service Broadcasting, which features the Mangapps Railway. The museum began its life as a private collection, and unlike many railways I have visited, it was not originally a railway line and has merely been built up on a farm from the ground up.The museum has a 3/4 mile line for passenger services which ran on the day of visit on the hour. The train goes past Old Heath Station and stops there on the returning journey. Passengers can board at Old Heath with tickets booked in advance. Old Heath is located on a public footpath, which follows the railway line up to the museum. I did not get off at Old Heath station, as to get back, I would have either had to wait an hour for the train to come back, or walk back up the line; which with the heat on the day of visit being so extreme, I opted to observe the station from the train. The museum was surprisingly large and well displayed. It was a welcome change for locomotives and brake vans to be open to board, which made the museum in my opinion, more interesting for the younger generation. Refreshments are available from an old Southern Region coach which also doubled as the museums entrance and the staff were friendly and very helpful. Please note that the cab ride was possible only by seeking permission from the driver and railway owner, this is not a service which is readily available. I would definitely recommend a visit to anyone of any railway interest level and any age. An adult ticket with unlimited train rides costs £12.
