Peak Rail

As I was staying at Center Parcs a mere 1 hour drive away, it felt rude not to tick another heritage railway off the list and in typical James Trains fashion, the weather was constantly changing from heavy wind and rain to a beautiful summers day! The high wind took me by surprise this day so I did not adapt the camera to deal with the noise so apologies for the added wind noise in certain parts of this video. Peak Rail is a 4.3 mile long, standard gauge heritage railway based on the edge of the Peak District National park, a little way from Chesterfield. It boasts 4 stations: Rowsley South which is the base station with the Engine Sheds, Darley Dale, Matlock Riverside and Matlock. Matlock Station has a mainline connection and is shared with the active rail network. The railway operates in a way I am yet to see anywhere else, where the locomotive pushes the train out of the terminus station at Matlock, and carries out the run around at an intermediate station (Matlock Riverside) which made for a long wait between the main stations but plenty of multi-train running potential! We parked at Rowsley South Station where the most parking is available, parking is also available at Darley Dale although limited, and Matlock which has a Pay & Display. Tickets cost a reasonable £15 each for an Adult Rover ticket. This stunning little line has the amazing backdrop of the beautiful hills that are the Peak District and Darley Dale is a well preserved example of how grand some rural stations used to be! The gift shop was very well stocked but unfortunately, I did not get a chance to try out the delights in the cafe. For a train enthusiast, Rowsley South is the station to devote a fair bit of time visiting, with an operational turn table, an impressive collection of rolling stock, a unique cable-operated signal box, and even some of Pete Watermans locomotives! PLEASE NOTE! The Engine Shed and sidings are not open to the public. However, on the day of visit I had emailed in advance to organise a behind the scenes tour of the extensive facility. This may not be possible for all visitors as they allowed for me to go around as I volunteer at 2 heritage railways and therefore have been trained in such environments. A big thank you to Pete Waller for the very extensive tour and apologies we had to cut it short! I do not own any of the music in this video. Music: . Globe - Pale Blue Eyes . Dreams - Joakim Karud Thanks for watching!
