His book 'A Darkness Lit by Heroes' used meticulous research to tell the story of the disaster in real time. He matched the eye-witness testimony from 65 miners to the contemporary maps of the mine’s workings to track where major characters were, and where they went. With these and other sources, his presentation answered such long-standing questions as: Why did the cable that started the fire fall? Is it true that the company constructed illegal bulkheads that prevented miners from escaping? Is the claim true that inexperienced men were left without the knowledge to save themselves? Ernest Sullau accidently started the fire in the shaft, but then ran throughout the mine saving upwards of 80 men: what was his path underground? Manus Duggan and JD Moore died saving groups of men by bulkheading in: where were their bulkheads, and where did they die? Doug answered many other such questions, old rumors, and beliefs about the disaster.
