It was unknown this version existed. Although fans are familiar with the original version from the “Dangerous” album in 1991, as well as the several live versions throughout the years, it has been revealed that “Dangerous” (rumored to be initially titled “The Girl Is Dangerous”) was originally written and recorded as far back as 1985-1986 during the Bad sessions at Flyte Tyme Studios in Minneapolis with his sister Janet Jackson, along with the production help of not only Joe Kehr, but the production duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, around the same time as the original versions of “Why You Wanna Trip On Me”, “Jam” and “Scream”, the first and latter also with Janet. The song, like “Why You Wanna Trip On Me” was initially an experiment between Michael, Janet, Joe Kehr and production duo Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, who had just recently left The Time, now also ex-Prince associates, who were looking to embark on an album with Janet by this point, as well as work with Michael. It’s believed that the original elements of Janet’s hit “What Have You Done For Me Lately”, also produced by Jimmy & Terry, come from this song. The song is also rumored to be written about one of the members of the girl group Tamyra 6, a female trio created by Joe Kehr. Michael, Janet, Jimmy & Terry, Joe Kehr are all providing background vocals throughout the track, along with musicians/artists who would become members of The Rag Tag Band. The song is written by Michael, Janet, Joe, Jimmy & Terry collectively. Bruno Mars and The Hooligans were uncredited for unknown reasons. He began working further on this version in 1986 with Jimmy & Terry, Joe and Janet, and was planned for release as a single, along with a short film. While the song runs around 4 minutes, there are several edits of the track, including a special dance edit. The LP version is 7 minutes, while the extended / full-length version is over 11 minutes long. This is due to Michael, Janet, Jimmy & Terry, Joe and The RTB experimenting and jamming with the song, with extra breakdown sections and adlibs. Due to time constraints, the song was edited down to multiple versions to potentially fit on a vinyl if they ever decided to put it on any album. While they all liked this version, Quincy felt that it was yet another song was “too intense” for his image at the time, among other issues. Quincy strongly disliked Joe bringing in Jimmy & Terry into the circle, due to their history with Prince. Joe was already on thin ice with Quincy for bringing in outside artists that he didn’t approve of. This was also an issue with “Why You Wanna Trip On Me”. As previously noted, this eventually caused a split between Michael & Quincy. Michael shortly gave the original version to Janet, so that she, Jimmy & Terry could rework it the way that they wanted to. Shortly after, the song evolved into “What Have You Done for Me Lately”, which became a hit for Janet’s second album “Control” in 1986. Michael would later on revisit the song a few years later in 1989 during the beginning of the Dangerous sessions, and eventually finished it for the Dangerous album in 1991. That one was produced by Michael and Teddy Riley, and the live performance of the song would ultimately become a staple in his concerts. //// No copyright infringement intended.
