Trains at Bad Bentheim & Salzbergen | 1st September 2023

I've wanted to go to Bad Bentheim for years to film the loco swapping of the IC Berlin trains taking place, and I finally had an opportunity to go! It's the first station in Germany across the border from The Netherlands between Hengelo & Rheine. The IC Berlin service is loco hauled between Amsterdam and Berlin but uses locos native to The Netherlands & Germany respectively. Because The Netherlands runs on 1,500V DC power and Germany (mostly) runs on 15kV AC, and the locos used don't have the agility to switch modes like all other modern locos that cross this border (and others where voltage and signalling between countries changes), the swapping of locos must take place. The signallers here have the power to change the voltage being provided through the wires down to very precise areas of electrification around the station as well providing a unique location where you can see NS' 1700s and DB's BR 101s running alongside each other. The 1700s are due to be replaced by Vectrons around November though so I had to go whilst I could to capture the old traction still in use! I'm unsure if it'll be operated with Vectrons throughout or if the swap to 101s will still take place, as the 101s have a higher top speed of 200km/h. They too however are also getting old, and a few have already started to be withdrawn and No. 001 preserved. They were built by Adtranz, later Bombardier, between 1996 and 1999 and were the pioneering locos behind what's now an almost standard design amongst Bombardier electric locos on the continent. Anyway the location also provides dual-voltage sidings to allow loco swapping on freight where necessary as well. After Bad Bentheim I went 2 stops up the line to Salzbergen where the cross-border link line meets up with a line from the north of Germany. At this location there is a preserved BR 43 steam loco and some old platform signs and signals. I hope you enjoy the video and feel free to comment down below!
