Commodore 64 Longplay [274] Chevy Chase (EU)

http://www.longplays.org Played by: MadMatty Chevy Chase by PAL Developments and published by Hi-Tec Software in 1991 "Can you make it across Los Angeles from Malibu to Laguna in this wheel spinning, rubber burning, hand-break pulling, garage stopping all action game. Hop into your classic 59 Chevy Belair, with its massive V8 engine and make it from Malibu to Laguna in time to meet your girlfriend, who will be waiting for you outside Ruby's Diner." Released as a budget game we get an Outrun style racer that looks better than it actually plays. Something went wrong with the C64 version as it doesn't seem to be complete or play quite like the other 8 bit versions. The troubles start on the title screen. If you let the music play, it eventually displays a high score screen and if you press fire to start, the game will crash. Other versions are one continuous game, playing through 4 levels each with 4 stages. In this C64 version, the game stops after every 4 stage and restarts at the next level. After level 4, the game just ends and throws you back to the title screen. No highscore entry or ending. I feel like the game was pushed out in an unfinished state to make a quick buck. The game plays simple enough. Fight the clock and reach the end of the stage. The cars are fairly chunky but not as much as the other versions. When a car approaches it likely the corner will turn into the same side which will throw you to the outside unless you are quick with cornering and correction. In stage two, you can claim an auto part to upgrade the car but they never seem to do anything that's noticeable. Overall, its not a bad budget racing game but its clear more time was given to the other versions. Win or lose its always going to be the same outcome.
