Living Your Passion: Reflections & Insights from a Food Systems Change Agent

This session was recorded on October 10, 2024 at the University of Washington as part of the NUTR 400/500 seminar on the topic of Food Systems and the Sustainable Development Goals. SPEAKER INFORMATION Ian Lai is a chef, educator, environmental advocate, and beekeeper based in Richmond, BC. Active in food security and equitable food systems since 2006, Ian has contributed to numerous prestigious kitchens, including the Four Seasons Hotel, Hy’s of Canada, and the United States Consulate General in Vancouver, where he served as Resident Chef. He also co-owned the Northwest Culinary Academy of Vancouver. With over 18 years of experience in the non-profit sector, Ian founded the Richmond Schoolyard Society and has been involved with the Greater Vancouver Food Bank and the Richmond Food Security Society. Currently, Ian is the Manager of Feeding Futures for the Richmond School District. When not working, he enjoys kayaking, rock climbing, and practicing yoga. ABOUT THE SERIES TOPIC With five years left to achieve the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, food systems have emerged as a guiding framework to achieve progress on all 17 goals. Food systems are transdisciplinary, cross-sectoral, and fundamental. Exploring solutions in this space therefore often works across multiple goals and toward the aim of “peace and prosperity for people and the planet”. In this seminar, we’ll explore a cross-section of food systems and these global goals, across economic, social, and ecological agendas, and hear from leaders and practitioners contributing to these spaces. ************** SEMINAR SCHEDULE Check out our next seminar sessions and speakers at: https://foodsystems.uw.edu/seminar
