This session was recorded on October 24, 2024 at the University of Washington as part of the NUTR 400/500 seminar on the topic of Food Systems and the Sustainable Development Goals. SPEAKER INFORMATION Lee Qi grew up in Singapore, and spent many a weekend catching crabs on sunny beaches. Seafood was an integral part of her childhood, often served at fancy (and boring) dinners. During her undergraduate journey at the University of Miami, she spent a semester abroad in the Galápagos Islands, where she first made the connection between the food on her plate and the people who caught it. Currently, she is a PhD student at the School of Aquatic & Fishery Sciences in the University of Washington. Her work takes a quantitative approach to fisheries management from various perspectives, from modelling the impacts of management on fishing behavior, to assessing the status of individual fish populations, to management methods for highly-mixed fisheries. Outside of work and school, she enjoys working on her bicycle, cooking up new recipes, and training her foster dogs. ABOUT THE SERIES TOPIC With five years left to achieve the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, food systems have emerged as a guiding framework to achieve progress on all 17 goals. Food systems are transdisciplinary, cross-sectoral, and fundamental. Exploring solutions in this space therefore often works across multiple goals and toward the aim of “peace and prosperity for people and the planet”. In this seminar, we’ll explore a cross-section of food systems and these global goals, across economic, social, and ecological agendas, and hear from leaders and practitioners contributing to these spaces. ************** SEMINAR SCHEDULE Check out our next seminar sessions and speakers at: https://foodsystems.uw.edu/seminar
