Samuil Feinberg: Piano Sonata No.1 (Eric Xi Xin Liang)

Recorded on December 16th, 2021 at home. Learned and refined in approximately 7 hours. Just a piece I wanted to revisit after starting it and never bringing it to completion 1.5 years ago :) Really brings back memories, both good and the bad. I think I didn't finish this piece at that time because I just didn't have the mood to match it. Honestly, some parts of this is harder than anything I encountered in Szymanowski's Piano Sonatas No.2 and No.3. Totally forgot that Feinberg's music is not exactly super easy to play 😰 I quite like this piece. It's dreamy, romantic sounding in some parts, explosively triumphant at the end, and all around full of positivity. I've strangely seemed to develop a kind of aversion towards music with overtly dark tones. I'm thinking it's possibly because of my exposure to Sorabji's nocturnes, though maybe it's also because my life has gotten a lot better since when I first started this piece. Also, I apologize for the slight glitches in the audio that sound like space lasers. Don't know how those got in there. As well, my piano's somewhat out of tune, but it's really not the optimal time for me to be tuning it because I might not be playing on it for at least 4 months starting January 2022. Also, another small note is that I had to amplify some of the sections to adequately capture the grandiosity of the moment, since at home, I'm unable to capture this range of dynamics. Anyway, this is probably the last video I'll be posting for this year (maybe), so Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays in general! At time of recording, Eric is a 4th year Computer Science student at the University of Waterloo.
