Feinberg: Piano Sonata No. 3, Op. 3 [Hamelin]

The work consists of a large-scale principal movement, headed "Sonate", preceded by a pair of movements composed around 1912, "Prélude" and "Marche funèbre". The composer Anatoly Alexandrov (Feinberg's lifelong friend) revised the opening movements in 1969—this is the version printed in the complete edition—intervening so significantly in the opening prelude that it may be regarded as a veritable recomposition; reason enough for Marc-André Hamelin's recording to adhere strictly to Feinberg's original manuscript, which has now been located in Moscow. In a handwritten catalogue for the state publishing house in the 1950s, Feinberg noted that his revisions of sonatas Nos 1 and 2 were to be taken into account, while stating that No. 3 "did not exist". But why did Feinberg distance himself from this most extensive of his sonatas? "Perhaps", says Marc-André Hamelin, "he felt that he'd created something so excessive that most pianists wouldn’t touch it." It would appear that Feinberg, as soon as the composition was completed, was already striving to achieve something new, such as emerged in the fourth sonata. The third sonata seemed to exceed every measure and was not destined to make its way in the world. However, fundamental ideas from this "concert sans orchestre" were incorporated in the Piano Concerto No. 1, Op. 20, so that the piano sonata he had consigned to the tomb was resurrected more than a decade later. 0:00 - I.
