Serge Gainsbourg - Ce Sacré Grand-Père

Adapted from the novel « Je m'appelle Jéricho » by Catherine Paysan, CE SACRÉ GRAND-PÈRE is a French comedy-drama co-written, co-produced and directed by Jacques Poitrenaud, released in 1968. The film stars Serge Gainsbourg, who co-stars with his idol Michel Simon. The story is about Jacques (Yves Lefebvre) who spends his summer holidays with his grandfather, Jericho (Michel Simon), and his wife Marie (Marie Dubois). The grandfather soon realises that his grandson's marriage is on the brink of collapse. He tries to revive childhood memories of the couple's past, with the intention of rekindling their love... Still collaborating with Michel Colombier, Gainsbourg worked on the music and had only one idea in mind : to get Michel Simon to sing. At first, however, Michel Simon refused, as there was no way he was going to waste his time in a recording studio. But Gainsbourg insisted and a compromise was reached: to record the two men live during the shooting of the film. Simon agreed, but announced that he would only do one take. Gainsbourg was nervous at the time of the recording, which took place in the middle of the countryside, in an environment that was difficult for good sound recording, and he tried to guide the great actor so that he would stay in tempo and, above all, in tone. One take was all it took... In the studio, Gainsbourg added an acoustic guitar and a few strings and that was it. All in all, a great moment of emotion with a freshness and spontaneity that would have been inevitably absent from a studio recording. As for the rest of the music, there's only one word for it : FANTASTIC.
