BOY ON A DOLPHIN is remarkable for several reasons. Firstly, it is Sophia Loren's first film in English, and it is also the first Hollywood film shot in Greece. This romantic adventure film released in 1957, directed by Jean Negulesco and based on the novel of the same name by David Divine, is a romantic and exotic story set in the islands of the Aegean Sea. It is against this backdrop that a sponge fisherwoman discovers an ancient statue at sea. Her heart is torn between Victor Parmalee (Clifton Webb), an unscrupulous billionaire and lover of ancient art, who wants to sell the treasure, and James Calder (Alan Ladd), who wants to give it to Greece... Beautifully photographed by Milton Krasner, BOY ON A DOLPHIN gave Hugo Friedhofer an unusual scope for instrumentation. The film contains sequences that allow sound descriptions of mountains, a port, a monastery, the Acropolis, cafés, street scenes and several long diving sequences in search of an ancient treasure. This is exactly what Friedhofer translated in just ten weeks of writing. He also incorporated Greek folk music, without striving for absolute authenticity, and a superb song performed by Mary Kaye. Orchestrated by Lionel Newman, the score was nominated for an Oscar for best music in 1958, but lost out to Malcolm Arnold's The Bridge on the River Kwai.
