Seoul Neighborhood Walk: Seocho-dong (between Sinnonhyeon and Gangnam stations)

#4k #walkingtour #korea As I was on my way to film a walk starting in Bangbae-dong, I stepped off a bus intending to hop on Seoul Subway Line 2 at Gangnam Station. I'd previously noticed that other neighborhoods had returned to their pre-COVID levels of activity, but this one had escaped my attention. There aren't many neighborhoods in Seoul as busy at this one on a Wednesday afternoon. I decided to postpone my Bangbae walk and, instead, do a walk around this part of Seocho-dong. Seocho-dong is in eastern Seocho-gu, situated right on the border the district shares with Gangnam-gu. The neighborhood's eastern border starts at the southwest corner of the Sinnonhyeon Station intersection and goes south along the west side of Gangnam-daero to a point just past Yangjae Station. The neighborhood extends west roughly four square blocks into central Seocho-gu, encompassing some of Seoul's busiest subway stations along with several educational, legal, and cultural facilities. Our walk is confined to a small sliver of the neighborhood in the northeast corner that's part of a broader area someone is usually referring to when they say "I'm hanging out in Gangnam tonight." Gangnam means "south of the river" and, depending on the context, can be understood as referring to: three particular neighboring districts in southern Seoul (Seocho-gu, Gangnam-gu, and Songpa-gu); Gangnam-gu itself; the backstreets in the vicinity of Gangnam Station, particularly those on the north side of the intersection (in Seocho-dong on the west side of Gangnam-daero and Yeoksam-dong on the east side). We start at Gate 8 of Sinnohnyeon Station, which is associated with the Subway Line 9 section of the station and part of its original construction (at which time it was Gate 6). We're right outside Kyobo Tower (01:12), owned by Kyobo Life Insurance and home to the Gangnam branch of Kyobo Bookstore (Korea's largest book retailer). As we get a look around, we can see the brand new Apple Store on the other side of Gangnam-daero (00:57). It opened about three months before this walk, which makes it the fifth to open in Korea (all in Seoul) and the second in Gangnam-gu. The other is at Garosugil in Sinsa-dong, but it's this one that carries the name 'Apple Store Gangnam'. There aren't a lot of people outside the subway station. I expect that's because these days, most people coming from and going to Sinnonhyeon Station on this side of the street will be using Gate 7 (02:02), which was added as part of the construction of the Shinbundang Line. Once we pass Gate 7, we start to see the crowd. A lot has changed since the last walk I filmed here. Aside from the new Apple Store and the opening of the Shinbundang Line extension from Gangnam Station to Sinsa Station in May 2022, some notable changes are: the first Five Guys store opened here two days before this walk (05:36); the original media poles on the east side of the street from 2009 have been replaced with new models (06:12); a new Samsung Building was constructed and is now the home of Samsung's flagship store, which opened two days before this walk. At Gangnam Station, we briefly turn west to get around the last building on the block (10:08), get a good view of Samsung Town across the street (home to Samsung Electronics and other Samsung subsidiaries) at 10:17, then immediately turn north on a backstreet (11:06). As we continue, we see several restaurants, snack shops, and coffee shops, along with some smaller office buildings. At 15:36, we turn west on another backstreet. It's here, and again when we turn north at 16:19, that we start to see the nightlife establishments: the kinds of restaurants that sell large quantities of alcohol and several bars. I couldn't resist including a shot of Woodstock (16:39), a little rock bar I first visited in the mid-90s that's still going strong. We head east again, back to the first backstreet we were on (19:00), then turn north. This leads us past many more restaurants, coffee shops, bars, and other establishments, eventually bringing us to Sapyeong-daero (23:30). Here, we turn east, then head down the steps outside Kyobo Tower (24:42), passing the entrance to Kyobo Bookstore, and through Gate 9 of Sinnonhyeon Station (25:17) to bring our walk to an end. ROUTE MAP: https://bit.ly/445ebZw META: I filmed this in the afternoon of June 28th, 2023, with an iPhone 14 Pro on a DJI OM 5 in 4K @ 60 fps. The temperature was around 30°C/86°F. I edited, graded, and rendered with DaVinci Resolve Studio 18.
