Standing proud across the Wensum Valley is the imposing tower of All Saints Church in Swanton Morley. This majestic 14th century structure signifies a glorious monument to the faithful but according to folklore hiding out in the crypt below is an entity of dark forces who can be summoned with a whistle. The medieval crypt here has been bricked up soon after it became dis-used in 1879. This subterranean vault was used as a charnel house in medieval times for storing skeletal remains as the graves here were re-used more than once. When the old skeletons were dug up and replaced with a new burial the previous occupant’s bones were stored in the crypt below the church. The only view down into this tiny chamber is through two narrow grilles located at ground level to the church. There is a famous story story which has been passed down through the local generations and is still folklore with villagers today. It is believed an evil entity inhabits the crypt whom can be summoned should you circle the church at midnight and then whistle through the grille at which point he would appear.
