A mysterious ruin lies deserted in the middle of a field. Burgh St Mary was abandoned 450 years ago!

The mystical ruin of Burgh St Mary lies deserted in the middle of a field towards the east coast of Norfolk. The ruin stands just inland about halfway between Fleggburgh and Filby and is located north west of Great Yarmouth. The last recorded rector here was way back in 1554 and the church was deserted soon afterwards. St Mary’s days were numbered after the reformation with the remaining congregation slowly merging towards Burgh St Margaret. There were three very bad outbreaks of plague in Norwich and Yarmouth in 1579, 1603 and 1665-6. Fleggburgh being so close to Yarmouth suffered greatly during these outbreaks. Some villagers today claim the deserted church was once used as a ‘pest house’ during outbreaks of the plague. Pest Houses were first used in England to house and isolate victims of plague. But could it really be conceivable that St Mary’s was utilised as a pest house? The time period does seem to match as St Mary would have been abandoned around the time the first wave of plague struck. However historical records seem to suggest it was used as a barn during this period of time. But is it possible the secluded building could once have had a dual-use as a ‘fever shed’ at any stage? ‘Plague houses’ were located on the outskirts of settlements to help stop the spread. Abandoned buildings which were isolated as far away from the local population as possible were often utilised as pest houses for this purpose. It is rumoured in the village plague victims were once stored in St Mary’s tower before burial but these claims cannot be authenticated as with talk of an undocumented plague pit nearby.
