From LEDs to lasers to optical modulators, quantum wells are ubiquitous. In this video I introduce the 'quantum well' and what we mean when we use the term (just a discontinuity in the conduction or valence band, in the context of semiconductors). This is part of my new series on optoelectronic and photonic devices, a course where we explore the quantum and macroscopic nature of devices and structures that interact with light.
